“That first pregnancy is a long sea journey to a country where you don't know the language, where land is in sight for such a long time that after a while it's just the horizon - and then one day birds wheel over that dark shape and it's suddenly close,
and all you can do is hope like hell that you've had the right shots.” - Emily Perkins
Crystal Cove Beach in Orange County was the location were we shot our first engagement session. That was a little bit more than 10 years ago. I’ve always liked to shoot here since it’s a little bit less crowded. So it’s pretty much my go-to place if a couple is trying to decide where to shoot. So I was glad to see that Katrina liked the place as much as I did the first time I saw it. I think the only drawback here is hiking up the steep hill to get back to the parking lot. But lucky for me, Katrina and JM were adventurous enough that they didn’t mind the hike. Although I was a bit concerned about Katrina, her being pregnant and all, that the hike and the heat might affect her. But after witnessing how JM was looking out for her every step of the way, I did not need to worry at all. So just like the steep hike that took place during the shoot, the journey into parenthood is long and arduous, but it is also worthwhile. The emotional high and lows of raising a newborn is to be expected. And unfortunately there is no instruction manual that comes with how to become a parent. But if it did, it’ll probably look like a manual that comes from IKEA. Where it’s in another language, and the longer you look at the drawings the weirder it gets. And even after going through the instructions countless of times, in the end you’ll end up just winging it. Such is the life of parents. But no matter how exhausting it is to take care of a newborn, when the baby finally falls asleep on your chest, you can’t help but fall in love over and over again. So with that said, after seeing how they worked as a team during the shoot, I think these two will be just fine.
Congratulations Katrina & JM! Enjoy the photos!
